My work explores and examines the different layers of the human experience and our interactions with both the natural and constructed worlds around us through the assemblage of a variety of repurposed materials. The pieces explore universal themes of healing and memory, as well as significant geographical and emotional locations. Driving each work is the desire to discover unexpected beauty and significance in the common materials of our daily lives.
I employ handcrafting methods to create a wire armature. I then sew and weave common items, such as coffee filters, maple leaves, paper towels or grapevines, into a new and surprising fabric that sometimes functions as a skin for the body forms, sometimes as clothing, and sometimes as both at the same time. I utilize these alternative materials, often destined for disposal or decay, in order to reclaim them and give them a new identity, holding their temporary character in tension with an idea of longevity, leaving in question which will win out in the end.
